ABOUT US

Discovery Surf School in Bigbury-on-Sea is a family run business that has been dedicated to providing top quality surf coaching since 2002. We take pride in delivering our lessons in an environment that is safe, fun and suitable for all ages and abilities - there’s no reason not to get involved!

Our surf school is ASI (Academy of Surf Instructors) accredited for surfing and AALA (Adventure Activity Licensing Authority) registered for SUP. Discovery is regarded as one of the top centres in the UK as we provide professional coaching with an emphasis on small teaching ratios to maximise pupils’ progress and tuition.

Location

Here at Discovery we are blessed to be based in an AONB area with really unique geography. Nature has provided us with the perfect wave for beginners, and neighbouring bays that are angled slightly differently present us with the perfect back up waves for when the swell is a bit bigger out the front.

Why Surf With Us?
Instructors

Our team is a family of local surfers who are friendly and always ready to encourage you to achieve. All of our instructors hold current ASI qualifications and DBS certificates, as well as being trained beach lifeguards with SLSGB (Surf Life Saving Great Britain). Most of our instructors have come up through the ranks of our Surf Club themselves, so really have grown up with lots of experience in the water.

During the winter you will also have use of boots, gloves and hoods so you stay extra toasty! We have a wide range of soft-top surfboards which are really buoyant so perfect for beginners, and a few fiberglass longboards and shortboards too.

Surf Spots
Superbank

Situated on the Bigbury side of the rivermouth, this is a dreamy spot for longer or foam boards on a slightly smaller day. It works best around mid tide. Here you'll be surfing over sand so it's nice and safe but beware of submerged rocks on the higher tide, and the rip current in the river, especially on spring tides.

Sedgewell

This spot is straight out in front of the Discovery Surf School base. At a higher tide here the waves can break quite quickly so are really fun to bodyboard too but if you time it right there are some nice peeling waves out the back. Underneath you will be sand, with a couple of rocks under the lifeguard hut to be aware of.

The Causeway

The Causeway is where we will run our lessons from when there is a bit more swell around, as this side of Bigbury offers more protection from big swell. Waves are bigger down towards the right hand side. Beware of rocks at either end of the beach, sweeping currents across the bay when it's stormy and rips either end of the beach.

Usually you will be surfing one of these three spots in your lesson. The sand banks can change a lot though so there's always some variation.
