Discovery Surf Hire
We've got all the gear you need to hire to get in the water whether you've surfed lots before, or just once or twice.
If you book one of our private surf (1:1 or 2:1) lessons, you can benefit from free surf hire for the rest of the day (subject to availability) meaning you can keep hold of your surfboard and wetsuit to get a few more practice hours under your belt.
When hiring out equipment, we ask that you leave a deposit with us (preferably a form of photo ID like a driving licence) .
We have a range of foam surfboards perfect for anyone who is learning to surf. The largest foam boards we have in stock are 9ft and really wide, with plenty of volume to help you when catching waves and standing up. As well as these, we also have several different models of 8 foot and 7'6 boards.
For those looking to try something to push their surfing a bit more, we have a range of smaller Softech foam boards, ranging from 5'7 to 7'6. We also have a fiberglass longboard and 6'6 egg board, as well as a couple of shortboards.

Situated on the Bigbury side of the rivermouth, this is a dreamy spot for longer or foam boards on a slightly smaller day. Super long rights and shorter lefts. It works best around mid tide. Here you'll be surfing over sand so it's nice and safe but beware of submerged rocks at high tide, and the rip current in the river, especially on spring tides.
This spot is straight out in front of the Discovery Surf shop. At a higher tide here the waves can break quite quickly so are really fun to bodyboard too but if you time it right there are some nice peeling waves out the back. Underneath you will be sand, with a couple of rocks under the lifeguard hut to be aware of.
Our favourite spot for teaching when the waves are a bit bigger! The Causeway is where we will run our lessons from when there is a bit more swell around. Waves are always bigger down towards the right hand side, towards Challaborough. Beware of rocks at either end of the beach, sweeping currents across the bay when it's stormy and the rip currents on both ends of the beach.
If you're keen to improve your surfing all year round then we've got you covered. Throughout Winter and Spring we have boots, hoods and gloves available, as well as 5mm wetsuits. Because we aren't open all day every day during the Winter, it's best to get in touch before coming down. Opening times.
